Driver's License
Any au pair in lawful status can legally apply for a driver’s license or state identification card with the following documentation:
- Valid passport with unexpired J-1 visa. The name on the passport must match the name on the DS 2019 form.
- I-94 “arrival/departure” record from the Customs and Border Patrol website: https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov/I94/request.html
- Form DS 2019 (for a J exchange visitor)
- Social security number (SSN) on a social security card
The au pair’s name must match on all of her documents – passport, DS 2019 form, I-94 record and social security card.

Au pairs should have at least six months remaining on their DS 2019 form in order to be eligible for a driver’s license.
